What should I check when I feel overall hot or cold?
Sensitivity to heat or cold throughout the body can be caused by various factors, including the thyroid, medications, anemia, and menopause. If discomfort persists despite no significant abnormalities in tests, we can determine the direction of Korean medicine treatment by examining systemic heat-cold tendencies along with sleep, digestion, sweating, and fatigue.
Distinguish between actual fever and subjective feelings of heat.
Whether it is confirmed by a thermometer Feveror whether the numbers are normal but you feel a sensation of heat rising from within your body. cold sensationSimilarly, note whether the skin is actually cold or if the primary issue is a feeling of difficulty enduring the cold.
Check for systemic changes.
If there are sudden changes in weight, or if pulsating, hand tremors, edema, or severe fatigue occur together, hyperthyroidismand Hypothyroidismwe identify causes that require testing.
Consultations for heat and cold sensations may continue even after normal test results.
If heat or cold continues to interfere with your daily life even when no clear disease is identified through tests, we can examine the flow of your temperature sensations in relation to sleep, digestion, sweat, thirst, and menstruation. Baekrokdam Heat and Cold Clinic performs pattern identification of systemic heat and cold tendencies to specify the goals and areas for adjustment through Korean medicine treatment.
We look for the point when things changed, rather than just referring to it as your usual constitution.
Distinguish whether you have been sensitive to cold since childhood or if it has changed suddenly in the last few months. If it has become harder to endure than before despite similar seasons or indoor temperatures, check if there were changes in weight, sleep, food intake, menstruation, or medications during the same period. Even if you are "naturally that way," it can be addressed in a consultation if it interferes with your daily life.
Note the extent to which heat and cold affect your daily life.
Record actual inconveniences, such as whether it wakes you from sleep, whether you avoid going out or exercising, or whether you repeatedly put on and take off clothes during work. If you used a thermometer, please record the measurement time and value. The intensity of the sensation and the actual body temperature are different pieces of information, and neither negates the other.
Check if medication and lifestyle changes occurred simultaneously.
Check for newly started prescription drugs, supplements, changes in caffeine or alcohol intake, or drastic dietary adjustments. Do not stop medication arbitrarily or try to force a change in body temperature; instead, inform the prescribing medical staff of the timing of these changes. If there are symptoms of infection or an actual fever, the cause of that must be identified first.
During the consultation, systemic reactions are integrated into a single flow.
Baekrokdam Heat and Cold Clinic does not immediately label someone as having a heat syndrome just because they are sensitive to heat, or a cold syndrome just because they are sensitive to cold. Based on actual fever status and test results, we conduct a medical interview and pattern identification regarding sleep, sweat, thirst, digestion, and fatigue. We then determine the direction of Korean medicine treatment, including herbal medicine, and explain the changes to be observed during treatment.
Referenced Evidence and Scope of Application
NHS Guide to Hyperthyroidism Symptomsreferenced heat sensitivity, sweat, pulsating, and weight changes, NHS Guide to Hypothyroidismand referenced symptoms of being more sensitive to cold than usual and the scope of blood test verification. Thyroid diseases or heat/cold patterns cannot be diagnosed based on systemic temperature sensations alone.
Apply this to my symptoms
This is how we continue the evaluation during the consultation
If you feel excessively hot or cold while others are fine, you should examine potential causes such as thyroid issues, anemia, medication, or menopause before dismissing it as a simple constitution. If discomfort remains after testing, we can examine the flow of systemic heat, cold, and energy together.
We ask these three things first
- Has this been a long-term issue, or have you suddenly become more sensitive to heat or cold recently?
- Are there accompanying changes in weight, pulse, edema, fatigue, or menstruation?
- Is it the same throughout the day, or does it change after meals, at night, or when you are nervous?
This is how the direction of Korean medicine treatment is determined
While continuing any confirmed treatments for thyroid issues, anemia, or menopause, we perform a pattern identification (Byeonjeung) for lingering heat/cold sensations, fatigue, digestion, and sleep even after levels have stabilized. In Korean medicine treatment, we do not unconditionally cool down or warm up the entire body, but prescribe based on the individual's distribution of heat and cold.
We monitor these changes during treatment
- The extent to which you must frequently change the indoor temperature or your clothing
- Fatigue, palpitations, and edema that occur along with systemic heat or cold sensations
- The speed at which the body recovers after sleep and activity
Frequently Asked Questions
If thyroid tests are normal, is it a matter of constitution?
Normal test results are important information, but there is no need to end the discomfort by simply labeling it as 'constitution.' We can further examine the distribution of symptoms and accompanying changes from the perspective of heat and cold.
We do not draw conclusions based on a single symptom name, but verify existing test results and the patterns in which symptoms appear together.
