What should be examined when your face feels hot and heat rises?

Facial heat sensations can be divided into facial flushing where redness is visible, upper-body heat sensations where only heat is felt, and patterns where sweating and throbbing occur together. Even if tests show no abnormalities, examining the time of day and accompanying symptoms can help find a more specific direction for Korean medicine treatment.

Distinguish between visible redness and felt heat sensations

Please note whether your face becomes red and hot, or if there is little outward change but you feel heat rising from within. It is also an important distinction whether the sensation extends to the ears, neck, and chest, and whether it subsides after a few minutes.

Accompanying changes help categorize the symptoms

  • Whether there is accompanying sweating, throbbing, hand tremors, or weight changes
  • Whether it occurs before or after menstruation, or menopause Whether it has changed over time
  • Whether it worsens after tension, anger, or stress
  • Dry mouth, insomnia, or heat in the palms and soles Heat sensationwhether these occur together
  • Whether the abdomen or feet feel cold instead

This information is used to facial heat sensation, hyperthyroidism, Hwabyung (anger syndrome)distinguish between different possibilities and to observe the heat-cold patterns of the remaining heat sensation even after tests.

In heat-cold medical evaluation, we do not look at the upper body alone

Even if there is facial heat, the direction of treatment may change depending on cold sensations in the lower body, digestion, sleep, sweating, and thirst. Baekrokdam Heat-Cold Clinic does not follow a single method of simply lowering heat; instead, we determine the direction of Korean medicine treatment, including herbal medicine, by examining the overall flow of how heat is generated and distributed through medical interviews and examinations.

Photos and time logs provide different types of information

If redness is visible, please take a photo of your face and neck together under the same lighting. Even if there are no visible changes, you can record the start time, duration, and the food, exercise, or tension experienced immediately prior. The absence of a photo does not mean there are no symptoms. We also examine when and in what situations the heat sensation felt by the patient recurred during the evaluation.

If symptoms overlap with menstruation or menopause, we examine the cycles together

Please indicate whether it recurs only before or after menstruation, whether it started after menstrual intervals changed, or whether night sweats and sleep disturbances occur together. We must distinguish between parts that can be explained by menopausal changes and parts that require separate verification, such as thyroid issues, medication, or skin reactions. If you are already receiving hormone therapy, do not change it arbitrarily and please prepare the details of your current medication.

Certain types of heat sensations require other evaluations first

Prompt medical evaluation is necessary if actual high fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain, or changes in consciousness occur, or if sudden weakness on one side of the face or slurred speech develops. If these signs are absent but recurring facial heat sensations interfere with your daily life, we can thoroughly examine this through heat-cold (Hanyeol) treatment, even if test results were normal.

Referenced Evidence and Scope of Application

Menopause Guide from the National Institute on Aging (NIA)regarding sudden heat sensations in the face and upper body, night sweats, and changes in sleep, Hyperthyroidism Symptoms Guide from the NHSwere referenced for the scope of checking heat sensitivity, sweating, palpitations, and weight changes. Facial heat sensations alone cannot be used to diagnose menopause or thyroid disease.

Apply this to my symptoms

This is how we continue the evaluation during the consultation

Although the moments when the face feels hot may seem similar, the situation differs depending on whether redness comes first, whether only heat is felt, or whether sweating and palpitations occur together. Rather than how much it is temporarily hidden by makeup or cold compresses, we must examine the frequency of recurrence and the disruption to daily life.

We ask these three things first

  • Is it the entire face, or specific areas such as the cheeks, ears, neck, or chest?
  • Which of the following occur together: redness, sweating, palpitations, or headache?
  • Is it related to tension, meals, alcohol consumption, menstrual cycle, or nighttime?

This is how the direction of Korean medicine treatment is determined

If upper body heat sensations persist after examining potential causes such as skin diseases, thyroid issues, or menopause, we perform a pattern identification (Byeonjeung) by looking at lower body coldness, digestion, sleep, and tension responses. Korean herbal medicine treatment focuses on regulating the underlying reason why heat concentrates upward and does not subside easily, rather than simply suppressing the heat in the face.

We monitor these changes during treatment

  • The frequency of heat sensations and the time it takes for them to subside
  • The extent to which redness, sweating, and palpitations occur together
  • Whether the burden of avoiding meeting people or falling asleep is reduced
