Please review the following steps before your appointment
At what level of heat or cold sensations should I seek heat-cold treatment?
You do not need to wait until your symptoms become severe. If recurring sensations of heat or cold interfere with your sleep, work, or outings, or if unexplained discomfort remains after medical tests, these can be addressed through heat-cold (Hanyeol) medical evaluation. However, urgent signals such as sudden paralysis, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or high fever require other evaluations first; afterward, we will specifically determine the role that Korean medicine treatment will play in managing the remaining discomfort.
You do not have to wait until symptoms worsen to seek medical evaluation
If your body temperature is normal but your face frequently flushes, if coldness in your hands and feet makes it difficult to go out, or if heat in the soles of your feet disrupts your sleep, there is already a reason to address this in a medical evaluation. The frequency of symptoms and their impact on your daily life are more important than the number of symptoms. Rather than wondering if you are 'sick enough to go to a hospital,' write down what you are currently unable to do.
Those with these symptoms may consider heat-cold (Hanyeol) medical evaluation
- Those who have undergone necessary tests but continue to experience sensations of heat or cold
- Those whose symptoms in one area change along with changes in sleep, sweat, digestion, or fatigue
- Those who experience mixed symptoms, such as a hot face but cold feet
- Those who have received treatment but wish to examine remaining symptoms from a different perspective
- Those who find it difficult to determine a specific diagnosis but wish to organize recurring patterns
This list is a starting point for deciding whether to further examine your current condition from a heat-cold perspective and how to set the direction for Korean medicine treatment, including Korean herbal medicine.
Try summarizing your symptoms in three sentences before inquiring
Write one sentence each for 'since when,' 'where and how,' and 'what is the most difficult part.' For example: 'Since three months ago, the soles of both feet feel burning around the time of falling asleep, and it is difficult because I wake up more than twice a night.' Please also prepare any test results and medications you are currently taking.
Medical evaluation involves more than just labeling symptoms as 'heat-cold'
Medical InterviewWe verify the affected area, timing, and aggravating situations, and perform a pattern identification of current symptoms by adding necessary Korean medicine examinations such as pulse diagnosis and abdominal diagnosis. Simultaneously, we check for possibilities that must be verified first, such as thyroid, neurological, vascular, or medication-related issues. The fact that tests showed no abnormalities is not discarded but is interpreted alongside current symptoms.
We will clearly guide you if other evaluations must take priority
If you experience sudden weakness on one side of the body, changes in consciousness, chest pain, difficulty breathing, high fever, or severe pain accompanied by rapid skin color changes, you must receive a prompt medical evaluation at a nearby medical institution. Even if it is not urgent, if there are new changes in weight, persistent sensory loss, or wounds that do not heal, we may first recommend necessary tests.
After the evaluation, we will jointly determine the possible course of action
Baekrokdam Heat-Cold Clinic determines the direction of Korean medicine treatment, including Korean herbal medicine, by identifying patterns in the distribution of heat and cold sensations and their connection to sleep, digestion, sweat, and fatigue. For areas where other tests or treatments are required first, we will explain the sequence, and for areas to be managed with Korean medicine, we will proceed by setting treatment goals and changes to observe.

Apply this to my symptoms
This is how we continue the evaluation during the consultation
Even if your symptoms are not emergencies, there is sufficient reason to seek medical evaluation if sensations of heat, cold, or sweating continue to disrupt your clothing choices, sleep, or social interactions. There is no need to wait until symptoms worsen just because previous tests showed no abnormalities.
We ask these three things first
- How often do the symptoms occur, and how long do they last once they start?
- Which of the following have you had to give up or avoid: sleep, work, going out, or interpersonal relationships?
- What symptoms or issues remain after the tests and treatments you have already received?
This is how the direction of Korean medicine treatment is determined
During the first visit, we identify symptoms that are urgent or require other treatments first, and examine your current discomfort and physical strength through heat-cold pattern identification. We will specifically determine the primary goal of Korean medicine treatment, the direction of the herbal medicine prescription, and the timing for follow-up evaluation.
We monitor these changes during treatment
- Number of times you changed your plans over the past week due to symptoms
- Intensity and duration during the most uncomfortable time of day
- One thing in your daily life you wish to recover first after treatment
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I only inquire after completing all tests?
You do not necessarily have to finish all tests. Based on your current symptoms and the tests you have already undergone, we can guide you during the consultation on which evaluations should be prioritized.
Can I still receive a consultation even if my symptoms are difficult to describe?
Yes. Starting with the patient's own descriptions, such as 'hot,' 'chilly,' or 'burning', we use medical interviews to specify the affected area, timing, and accompanying changes.
We do not draw conclusions based on a single symptom name, but verify existing test results and the patterns in which symptoms appear together.
