What should I check if test results are normal but I still feel heat or cold sensations?

Just because a test did not find a cause does not mean the symptoms you feel do not exist. While respecting existing test results, the Baekrokdam Heat and Cold Clinic examines details not captured in test reports, such as affected area, timing, sleep, sweat, and digestion, categorizing them by heat and cold patterns to find points where Korean medicine treatment can help.

Normal test results and actual discomfort can coexist

Some patients experience burning sensations in the soles of their feet, coldness in the hands and feet, or flushing only in the face, even when tests show no specific abnormalities. A normal result does not negate the patient's experience. Rather, after organizing the confirmed diseases and risks, it becomes a starting point to more closely examine the distribution and recurring patterns of symptoms that are difficult to capture in a test report.

Document patterns not captured in test reports

  • The time when heat or cold sensations began and the date of the tests
  • Any numbness, pain, color changes, sweat, or throbbing that appeared after the tests
  • Whether symptoms appear on only one side of the body
  • The extent to which symptoms interfere with night sleep, work, or exercise
  • Medications or supplements that were newly started or had a change in dosage

When these records are reviewed alongside changes in sleep, digestion, sweat, thirst, and fatigue, we can specifically categorize whether the heat or cold sensation aligns with a particular heat-cold pattern.

How we proceed with heat and cold medical evaluations

Based on the confirmed test results, we examine the location and timing of heat and cold sensations, the difference between the upper and lower body, and changes in sleep and digestion Medical Interviewand combine them with a physical examination. Based on those results, we explain the symptoms and recovery goals to be addressed by Korean medicine treatment, as well as the direction for the herbal medicine prescription.

If symptoms have changed, we will also provide guidance on necessary checks

If symptoms suddenly worsen after previous tests, or if new signs appear, such as weakness on one side of the body, decreased sensation, chest pain, shortness of breath, or high fever, re-examination or other medical evaluations may be required first. While distinguishing these exceptions, those whose discomfort persists for a long time without danger signs can be fully evaluated for treatment from the perspective of heat-cold balance and pattern identification (Byeonjeung).

Write down questions you wish to ask again in the consultation room

Write down the things you were unable to ask after being told your results were "normal." You can ask which conditions the tests were checking for, whether your current symptoms are the same as they were at the time of the test, and what changes would necessitate further confirmation. In heat-cold consultations, we determine the next steps by adding questions such as "at what time and in which areas do my symptoms recur" and "to what extent can Korean medicine treatment help."

The goal is not to overturn test results, but to explain the remaining discomfort

Based on the possibilities excluded by tests, we use medical interviews and physical examinations to specify remaining sleep disturbances, fatigue, digestive changes, and the distribution of temperature sensations. We set the goals for the herbal medicine prescription and the timing for progress checks, and provide guidance on the sequence of any further necessary confirmations.

Referenced Evidence and Scope of Application

Peripheral Neuropathy Guide from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)which notes that burning sensations, numbness, and changes in temperature sensation can appear as neurological symptoms, NICE guidelines on shared decision makingwhich emphasize the principle that options for tests and treatments, as well as the next steps, should be reviewed together with the patient. Based on this, we determine the next treatment sequence by considering both the tests already performed and the remaining discomfort.

Apply this to my symptoms

This is how we continue the evaluation during the consultation

Being told that test results are normal may mean that no dangerous causes were identified, but it does not erase the experience of struggling with sleep and daily life due to recurring sensations of heat, cold, or sweating. Rather than re-interpreting the result sheet, the next direction for treatment becomes clear when we examine when symptoms start and what causes them to change.

We ask these three things first

  • What were the most uncomfortable symptoms before the tests, and which symptoms still remain now?
  • Do sensations of heat or cold recur in a specific area, time, or situation?
  • Are there any accompanying changes in sleep, digestion, sweating, or throbbing?

This is how the direction of Korean medicine treatment is determined

Using the tests already received as a starting point, we perform pattern identification (Byeonjeung) on the daily changes not captured by numerical values and the overall heat-cold balance of the body. In Korean medicine treatment, we do not unconditionally lower heat or warm the body all at once; instead, we determine the direction of the herbal medicine prescription along with the background in which the symptoms occur.

We monitor these changes during treatment

  • Whether the frequency and duration of symptoms are decreasing
  • Whether daily activities that were difficult, such as falling asleep, going out, or working, are improving
  • Whether changes occur in sweating, digestion, or fatigue that accompanied feelings of heat or cold

Frequently Asked Questions

I was told my results were normal; do I need to be tested again?

If symptoms have newly worsened or their pattern has changed, a re-evaluation may be necessary. Please inform your medical staff about the timing of your previous tests and any subsequent changes, rather than relying solely on previous results.

Does the heat-cold evaluation replace medical tests?

No. We do not skip necessary medical tests and differential diagnoses; instead, we determine the direction of Korean medicine treatment by examining those results alongside the overall pattern of your symptoms.

Key Points

  • Some people experience burning heat in their soles, coldness in their hands and feet, or facial flushing even when no specific abnormalities are found in tests. The fact that results are normal does not negate the patient's experience. Rather, after organizing confirmed diseases and risks, it becomes a starting point to more closely examine the distribution and recurring patterns of symptoms that are difficult to capture in a test report.
  • By reviewing these records alongside changes in sleep, digestion, perspiration, thirst, and fatigue, we can specifically determine which heat or cold pattern a sensation of heat or cold belongs to.
  • Based on the confirmed test results, we use medical interviews and examinations to re-evaluate the location, timing, differences between the upper and lower body, and changes in sleep and digestion where sensations of heat or cold occur. Based on these results, we explain the symptoms and recovery goals to be addressed by Korean medicine treatment, as well as the direction of the herbal medicine prescription.
