Yin Deficiency

Related terms: State of yin deficiency · 陰虛 · yin deficiency

Yin deficiency does not simply mean a lack of body fluids; it is a Korean medicine category determined by observing whether various changes, such as dryness, nighttime heat sensations, night sweats, and dry mouth, appear together. It is not the same as a specific value in a blood test.

When is this term used?

This is a pattern identification expression considered when several clues are present together, such as a noticeable feeling of heat in the afternoon or night, dryness of the mouth and skin, or night sweats during sleep. A diagnosis of Yin deficiency is not concluded based on a single symptom alone.

Is this the same as anemia or dehydration?

They are not the same. Anemia and dehydration are medical conditions with specific tests and diagnostic criteria, whereas Yin deficiency is a Korean medicine concept that describes a cluster of various patterns identified through patient interviews and physical examinations.

What is evaluated during the medical consultation?

We examine the time when the feeling of heat intensifies, thirst and dry mouth, sleep, sweat, bowel movements, as well as tongue and pulse diagnosis.

What should I be careful about in daily life?

Do not drink excessive amounts of water or consume specific foods for long periods based solely on the term Yin deficiency. A proper management plan must be determined after confirming the cause of dry mouth and heat, as well as your current medications and digestive state.

Yin deficiency is not the same as simple lack of hydration or dry skin

In Korean medicine, Yin deficiency is viewed as a pattern where the foundation that moistens and stabilizes the body is insufficient. We check for the coexistence of dry mouth and skin, heat in the afternoon or night, night sweats, and changes in sleep and bowel movements. It is not determined by thirst alone on a day when you have drunk little water.

Commonly confused terms and their differences
Dehydration is a medical condition where fluid loss exceeds intake, leading to functional problems, and dry mouth is a symptom that requires checking saliva secretion, medications, and diseases. Yin deficiency is not the same type of diagnosis as these; the influence of anemia, perimenopause, thyroid issues, or medications is distinguished through necessary tests.
Information to record before your visit
Please record when the dryness of the mouth, eyes, and skin began, as well as the timing of heat and sweat during the day, and your sleep and bowel movements. Recording your water intake, urine volume and color, changes in weight or menstruation, new medications, caffeine, alcohol, vomiting, diarrhea, and recent blood test results will help distinguish actual fluid loss from pattern identification clues.
Scope of this material
WHO data was used to define the scope of Yin deficiency as a traditional medicine term, while MedlinePlus and NIDCR data were used to distinguish the causes and tests for dehydration and dry mouth. Do not excessively consume water or specific foods, or expect the effects of herbal medicine, based solely on the explanation of Yin deficiency. Confusion, fainting, inability to urinate, or difficulty swallowing require prompt medical evaluation.

Heat and Cold ColumnWhat does 'deficiency heat' mean, how is it different from symptoms of having too much heat, and what is considered during herbal medicine treatment?

We explain that deficiency heat is not a disease name but a Korean medicine pattern identification where heat sensations emerge while the body's foundation is lacking, and we provide guidance on the differences between excess heat and fever, as well as the direction of herbal medicine treatment.

Heat and Cold ColumnWhen it is hard to fall asleep because your feet feel hot at night: Korean medicine treatment for nighttime heat sensations and sleep

We categorize foot heat sensations that worsen at night into peripheral nerve sensation, burning palms and soles, and Yin deficiency with internal heat, and explain herbal medicine and acupuncture treatments to restore sleep as well.

Heat and Cold ColumnI feel heat in my hands and feet and have a dry mouth, but my tests are normal. Why is this happening?

For those experiencing discomfort from burning sensations in the palms and soles and dry mouth despite no specific abnormalities in hospital tests, we examine the causes from the perspective of the body's heat balance and provide criteria for self-assessment.

Medical GuideHow do I distinguish between different types of heat and burning sensations in the soles of the feet or palms of the hands?

Heat in the palms and soles may be centered on a burning sensation rather than actual skin temperature. We first distinguish whether there is numbness or decreased sensation; if the cause is not clear from tests, we determine the direction of Korean medicine treatment by examining whether it worsens at night and its relation to sleep, dry mouth, and fatigue.

Medical GuideWhat should I do if my tongue feels burning even though the inside of my mouth looks normal?

Even if no wounds are visible, a burning pain in the tongue and mouth is a real symptom. If the burning sensation persists after checking for oral diseases, nutritional, or medication effects, we can determine the direction of Korean medicine treatment by examining the timing, dry mouth, sleep, and systemic heat sensations.
