Five things to examine before the amount of sweat when you sweat excessively
If you have excessive sweating, please examine the affected area, the situation in which it starts, the duration, any feeling of heat, and your condition after sweating. Sweating that suddenly occurs throughout the entire body, starts on only one side, or recurs during sleep requires an investigation into the cause.

Even when people use the same phrase, 'I sweat a lot,' the uncomfortable situations they face are different. Some find it difficult to touch paper because their hands are wet, while others have to stop talking because sweat is streaming down their face. Some feel fine after wiping away the sweat, while others feel drained of energy for a while.
These differences are important during a medical evaluation. Where it occurs, in what situations, for how long, and how your body feels afterwardKnowing these details allows for a more specific determination of the causes to verify and the direction of treatment. You do not need to have an extreme amount of sweat to seek a consultation. If it interferes with your work and daily life, that discomfort itself is a reason for a medical evaluation. International Hyperhidrosis Society evaluation guidelinesalso examine the distribution, progression, triggering conditions, and the impact on daily life.
Whether only the hands and feet are wet, or if it occurs all over the body
Sweating that is long-term, recurrent, and symmetrical in specific areas such as the hands, feet, or armpits is a common presentation of primary focal Hyperhidrosishyperhidrosis. However, a diagnosis is not made based on the location alone. We also consider the age of onset, family history, whether sweating decreases during sleep, and whether there is an influence from medications or other diseases.
If you have suddenly started sweating all over your body or if sweating has begun only on one side of your face or torso, identifying the cause comes first. Not all focal sweating is primary, and generalized sweating does not necessarily mean there is a serious illness. what has changed from your usual stateis a crucial clue. American Academy of Dermatology guidelinesdistinguish between primary hyperhidrosis and sweating caused by medications or other diseases.
Whether it happens when it is hot, or when you are nervous
If your hands get wet right before a presentation, nervousness may be the trigger. However, simply explaining that you 'just need to relax' is not enough, as some people become more nervous because they worry that their sweat will be visible.
Heat and nervousness can both have an influence. In experiments conducted on healthy individuals, the sweat glands responding to heating and mental arithmetic stimuli overlapped significantly. While this is not a study proving the effectiveness of hyperhidrosis treatment, it shows that the two stimuli cannot be unconditionally separated. the abstract of the relevant physiological experimentcan be referenced.
If it is related to meals, please let us know if it only happens with hot or spicy foods, or if it recurs even with non-spicy foods. If sweating on the face and head during meals is the primary discomfort, a column on meals and sweatingprovides further information.
Whether it flows for a long time once it starts
Producing a large amount of sweat in a short burst is different from sweating a small amount over a long period. It is also helpful to distinguish whether new sweat continues to form even after wiping, or if the clothes simply remain wet.
We do not determine that a specific regulatory mechanism in the body is broken based solely on the statement that 'once it starts, it does not stop easily.' Heat may remain even after exercise, or tension and other stimuli may persist. Even without precise minute-by-minute records, it is helpful to explain the surrounding circumstances, such as 'it continued for a while even after leaving a hot place.'
Please also mention any sweating that occurs during sleep. The points to be checked differ depending on whether it is due to a hot bedroom or thick blankets, or whether sweating that soaks clothes and bedding recurs even in a cool environment. If recurring night sweats are accompanied by fever or unexplained weight loss, please seek medical evaluation. NHS Guide to Night Sweatsalso recommends checking for these accompanying changes.
Whether the areas where you sweat and the areas where you feel heat are the same
You may feel that your face is flushing while your abdomen or feet are cold. In Korean medicine, this experience is Upper-body heat and lower-body coldexamined from a specific perspective. However, we do not conclude that heat inside the body has actually moved upward based on feeling alone, nor do we explain sweating of the head by a single cause.
In evaluations of heat and cold, we examine whether sweating and heat sensations begin at the same time, whether coldness in the hands and feet was pre-existing or occurs after sweating, and whether discomfort in digestion or sleep also changes. This is to avoid deciding on heat-reducing treatment solely because the hands and feet are wet, or deciding on a warming prescription solely because the hands are cold.
Whether you feel refreshed or exhausted after sweating
Try to distinguish whether you sweat even with slight movement while already in a fatigued state, or whether you were fine before activity but feel exhausted after sweating. It is also important for the medical evaluation if dizziness or throbbing starts first and is followed by sweating.
If you experience severe thirst, decreased urination, or dizziness after sweating heavily, it is necessary to check for fluid loss. However, the fact that palms are wet alone cannot be used to conclude dehydration or depletion of energy. NHS Guide to Dehydrationexplains thirst, changes in urination, dizziness, and fatigue together. If dizziness persists even after resting in a cool place or if urination has clearly decreased, do not delay medical evaluation.
Sudden Cold sweatsaccompanied by chest pain, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousnessappearing, 119 or emergency room evaluation takes priority over hyperhidrosis consultation. This is Guide to Cardiac Emergency Symptomsa separate situation handled in the guide.
The causes and medical evaluation sequence according to the affected area and sweating during sleep can be Hyperhidrosis Guidefurther explored in the guide.
These five factors are considered together when determining treatment
For hyperhidrosis, there are various treatment options depending on the area and condition, such as topical antiperspirants, iontophoresis, and botulinum toxin injections. If a causative disease or medication is identified, treatment or adjustment for that takes priority. Even if you suspect a medication is the cause, do not stop taking it on your own; consult the medical professional who prescribed it. Treatment guidelines from the dermatological societycan be used to check general options.
At Baekrokdam Han-Yeol Clinic, we examine changes in sweating, heat/cold sensations, digestion, sleep, and energy levels while evaluating the necessary causes and reviewing existing treatments. If Korean medicine treatment is appropriate, we consider herbal medicine and acupuncture based on these differences. We do not use the same prescription for all types of sweating, nor do we determine a specific heat-cold state based solely on normal test results.
You do not need to complete a long questionnaire before your consultation. Think of the single most uncomfortable moment and describe the area where you sweated, the situation immediately preceding it, the duration, any accompanying heat sensations, and how you felt afterwardto us. If your medications have changed, please let us know when that happened. Guide to checking heat sensations and sweating after medication changesmay be helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions
If I have a lot of sweat on my hands and feet, does it mean I have a lot of heat in my body?
It is not possible to determine that there is excessive body heat based on hand and foot sweating alone. We check for sensitivity to heat, tension, when the sweating began, sweating in other areas, and accompanying symptoms.
Can I receive treatment for hyperhidrosis for sweat that occurs when I am nervous?
Yes. If sweating is severe enough that you avoid shaking hands, writing, or working, there is sufficient reason for a consultation. The fact that it worsens with tension does not lead us to conclude it is a personality issue or an anxiety disorder.
I feel drained of energy when I sweat; does this mean I am unconditionally weak?
The cause cannot be determined solely by the presence of both sweating and fatigue. If thirst, decreased urination, or dizziness follow heavy sweating, we check for the possibility of dehydration, and we distinguish whether you were already tired or became exhausted after sweating.
For which types of sweating should the cause be checked first?
Please consult a medical professional for sudden worsening of generalized sweating, newly developed sweating on one side, or recurring night sweats even in cool environments. If accompanied by chest pain, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness, 119 or an emergency room evaluation takes priority.
